What is Waste ?

Waste is any substance which is discarded after primary use, or is worthless, defective and of no use. The main source of garbage is the packaging of various daily necessities, food, ware, jewelry and so on. In China, the main source of waste also includes construction waste, which accounts for 30%-40% of total city waste. According to reports, the annual output of urban garbage in China is nearly 150 million tons, and the annual increase rate is about 8%.

  • Types of Waste:

Types of waste include electrical waste, plastic waste, metal waste, glass waste , paper waste and organic waste. Waste can originate from many sources such as agricultural waste, industrial waste, transportation waste ...

  • Waste Cycle:

Each stage of the production process of a product generates a specific type of waste. Each waste product requires a specific management solution. We generally consider three groups of waste. Those generated as a result of:

  • extraction and transformation of raw materials

  • manufacturing and production of goods (including building construction)

  • distribution and consumption of manufactured products

The Life cycle approach gives a more complete picture of the waste and energy associated with a product.

In partnership with the 2019 Water Towns Environmental Film and Arts Festival and Duke Kunshan University, we, the students of Environmental Chemistry ( CHEM 120), studied and analyzed the science behind the DKU sustainability pledge to spread awareness on the impacts of Waste on air, water and soil and the different ways students at DKU can get involved.
